Waking up at 3:00am was not fun, nor driving in the dark, but to see the sun rise over giraffes and hyenas was worth it. One of my favorite things to do (that truly was worth the $500 additional fee) was to take a hot air balloon ride at sunrise. The terrain of the reserve is primarily open grassland making it a great wildlife spotting destination. The Mara is also home to the elusive leopard, lions, and cheetahs! “The Mara” as it’s commonly referred as, was established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1961. It’s the best place to see the Great Migration – the annual movement of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle between Kenya and Tanzania.
